February Newsletter

This month we are looking ahead to one of our busiest - and best - weeks of the year, Zero Waste Scotland's Pass It On Week - Scotland's annual celebration of re-use, repair and swapping.  The ultimate aim is to encourage all of us to change our habits, so that buying second-hand becomes second nature and we pass on rather than throw out what we no longer need or want.

This year it will run from Saturday 9th - Sunday 17th March and the theme is "The Big Declutter".  Right up our street!

We are, of course, running several events, both here at the Gate Church and in the community, but we are really encouraging everyone to take part whether within their family, community or workplace.  Here are a few of the things you could do:

  • organise a swap shop or an upcycling event

  • arrange a donation drive (you could take one of our Give Boxes for the week)

  • arrange an amnesty - be brave and look into your shed for tools, or your cupboards for kitchen gadgets that you know deep down you will never use again.  Or perhaps you could encourage everyone you know to hand in scarves or handbags or shoes?

We can pick up the goods you collect and pass them on to new homes.

Perhaps you have a better idea, one that you can really see working for you.

We will be publicising everything that is happening so please let us know if you arrange something so that your event - whether big or small - can be included.  Just think how much we could achieve if we all worked together.  The more events taking place, the more people are involved and the more savings will be made, whether that is money, resources or the planet itself.

We continue to be astonished at the frequency our boxes are filled, and are delighted to have new volunteers helping us sort through the donations. Remember, if you would like to have a box somewhere near you, or at your work, do please let us know and we will get it sorted.

To see our current locations check out the Give Box Map on our website.

We have arranged a couple of repair cafes as part of Pass It On Week. Having the skills and confidence to make small repairs is a great way to make clothes last longer. It's also incredibly satisfying!  As always these events will be informal and relaxed and - hopefully - fun.

Anyone who has been in our church recently  will know that the work to make it as energy efficient as possible is continuing ....

One of our new volunteers, Hannah said, "I really like volunteering here.  I like the people and it is interesting seeing the donations.

It has made me think about how much stuff I have at home so I have had a clear-out and brought several bags in to the project."

If you would like to have an informal chat about doing any kind of voluntary work with us please get in touch.
