June Newsletter

Welcome to our very first newsletter! As many of you will know we were recently granted another round of funding from the Scottish Government's Climate Challenge Fund. This allows us to continue our work from the last few years, as well as to set up some exciting new initiatives over the next two years, such as Dundee Community Fridge and a range of workshops, screenings and talks. Our main focus is now on changing behaviours and attitudes towards climate change and waste, and encouraging our community to transition to a lower carbon lifestyle.

We have created this monthly newsletter to update you all on each element of the project, you can unsubscribe at any time if you no longer wish to hear from us. Please do get in touch if you want to know more about what we're doing, if you have any ideas for events you would like to see, or how you can get involved. On to the list of exciting events we have lined up for you this month...

DATES FOR YOUR DIARY

Give Box donations sorting - 13th June & 27th June, 1-4pm, Gate Church International
An opportunity to volunteer and help us sort through donations from all around the city, to give to charities helping those in need. If you can make it for an hour or three, we'd be very grateful.

Food-growing planting day - 7th June, 2-5pm, Dundee University raised beds, Miller's Wynd
Do you want to learn how to lower your carbon footprint through growing your own food, but don't know where to start? Or just love gardening and want to join anyway? We will be planting lots of nice veggies and herbs in our new raised beds if you want to come along and learn or take part!

Wonder Box Workshop - Starts 7th June, 11-1pm, Gate Church International
Here at Gate Church Carbon Saving Project, we want to show people how to sew again, how to consume less home energy, how to eat local/seasonal produce and how to re-use old items... so this 4-week workshop ticks all of our boxes. So if any of this sounds interesting to you and you'd like to learn more about environmental issues, come along and give it a go! The workshop is free, but please book tickets here to secure a space.

Film Screening - 'A Plastic Ocean' - 17th June, 7-10pm, Gate Church International
Come along and join us in watching this captivating and award-winning film by Craig Leeson - "An epic global adventure following a filmmaker and a world record free-diver as they travel the earth discovering the shocking impact plastic is having on our oceans and the marine animals that live there." The event is free, but please book tickets here to secure a space.

COMMUNITY FRIDGE

Plans for Dundee Community Fridge are well underway! We have been in talks with Dundee City Council and the West End Community Council to discuss placing the fridge in a standalone structure, on the Perth Road, and are now in the process of applying for planning permission. We are also seeking any local businesses who may be willing to help us in donating/sourcing a 10' shipping container which will be the basis of our structure. This is an exciting opportunity to be involved in a real community-focused project and we would be very grateful for any help on this!

GIVE BOXES

Last year our Give Box campaign was extremely successful smashing all expected targets, so thanks to everyone that took part so far. In total we collected 4,737kg of goods from our growing network of boxes, which gives a carbon saving of 53.62 tonnes. To translate, that's the equivalent of planting 179 trees!

We are in the process of expanding our network of donation boxes, if you know somewhere a box would be well used, please do let us know. To see our current locations check out the Give Box Map on our website.

CARBON LITERACY

We are excited to announce the launch of our Carbon Literacy workshops and events. We will be running a whole host of events aimed at showing people how to live more eco-friendly lives, as well as understanding climate change and what it means for our community, and the world.

We have recently been offered the use of some raised beds at Dundee University, and are looking for some volunteers to help us run growing workshops, or to help us with the maintenance of the beds. Food growing is high on the list of carbon lowering activities, and we're keen to help people gain knowledge on how to get started. If gardening is your thing and you'd like to help, please get in touch!

COMMUNITY OWNED BUILDINGS

We have a lot of plans for improvements to our buildings over the next two years, including: draft proofing, installing loft and underfloor insulation, expanding our rainwater harvesting system and even adding more solar panels to our roof.

Works to our rainwater harvesting system are already underway, although with all the good weather we've been having recently there isn't much to report yet! If you would like to find out more about our plans then feel free to drop by for a guided tour during our Doors Open Day event on Saturday 8th September.

VOLUNTEERING

There are so many opportunities to volunteer with the project, whether it's helping with Give Box donations, gardening, workshops and events, or to be a part of the Community Fridge team. So no matter what skills you have or how much time you can give, we would love to hear from you.
