I heard this song for first the time a few weeks ago and was instantly moved by it. This song speaks of being ‘gracefully broken’ and powerfully declares ‘I am strong when I am weak’.
It is no secret that this has been a season of brokenness for me, however, being ‘broken’ before God is not simply an emotional thing. We can feel broken in our emotions and cry out to God but it is not the same as breaking OURSELVES open before Him and inviting Him to use us in our weakness.
“But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” – 2 Corinthians 12:9-11
There will be seasons when we feel our weaknesses, hardships and persecutions more than others but every day we have an opportunity to be broken before God. It is possible, as this song says, to be ‘gracefully broken’ - to make yourself completely vulnerable before God and others and yet still stand firm and strong on His word.
How wonderful is our God that he constantly marries together things which seem to be so wildly opposed to each other. As you listen to this song, I encourage you to do something brave. Name the weaknesses, hardships, insults, persecutions or difficulties you feel you are facing today and then open your arms and heart to God and invite Him to use you not in spite of, but because of those things. Then hold your head up, declare ‘I am strong when I am weak’ and witness His power at work in You.'
